Cops nab dacoit after shootout
In a scene straight out of the movies, the city police chased, shot at and injured a fleeing 25-year-old dacoit in Gidadakonenahalli near Jnanabharathi on Saturday afternoon.
The dacoit, Sunil Gopal, was fleeing on a two-wheeler when Inspector K.P. Sathyanarayana, leading a team of policemen from the Kengeri station, chased and shot him injuring him in the right leg. Sunil had robbed a woman only on Friday, the police said. He was shifted to Victoria Hospital and the doctors said his condition is stable. Sathyanarayana and Constable Shesha were injured in the incident. While the inspector was treated as an outpatient, the constable has been admitted to a private hospital.
The police said Sunil, from Maddur, and four others of his gang attacked and robbed Shobha, a resident of Agara, and her friend, while they were riding a two-wheeler on NICE road. The gang also tried to kidnap the women in a car when some passersby noticed the commotion and stopped the vehicle. They managed to catch one of the culprits, Satish, while others escaped. The criminals took away a 100 gm gold chain from Shobha.
Satish, during interrogation, revealed to the police the identities of other gang members and their whereabouts. “Based on these clues, the Kengeri police were looking for the absconding dacoits in nearby areas. The police managed to trace Sunil and gave him a chase in their jeep. The police stopped him and asked him to surrender. But Sunil pulled out a knife and attacked the police, who shot him in the leg in self-defence,” said DCP S.N. Siddramappa.
