Cops appeal for calm, say no cause for alarm
There is an exodus, but DG&IGP Lalrokhuma Pachau feels that only rumours of attacks against the North-Easterners have been floating in the city and there is nothing to fear. His justification: There have been no cases filed against any attack in any of the police stations across the state.
Addressing a media conference on Wednesday evening, he said, “Much is being said about attacks on the North-East people. But till now, no such cases have been registered in any police station. But fearing attacks, several North-East people are leaving the city. But I want to tell everyone that the city is safe.”
To ensure the safety of North-East people all possible measures are being taken and nobody should panic, Mr Pachau said. The state police have set up a special team headed by V.S. D'Souza, DCP (Intelligence), as the nodal head to investigate and coordinate on issues related to the present situation.
The city police have asked the North-East people to contact the police even if someone threatens them. “We are serious about the issue. The Home Minister has ordered the state police to provide all possible protection. If they are hesitant to go to the police station, they can call any control room and register a complaint," said City Police Commissioner B.G. Jyotiprakash Mirji.
The complaint can also be directly conveyed to Mr D'Souza on his cellphone – 9480801020. A city police team, headed by the police commissioner, Additional commissioner and other senior officials, will monitor the situation.
