Congress worried over BJP’s caste card tactics
Congress MLA B.C. Patil who had created a furore with his reported move to join the NCP, called on AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi at the latter’s residence in New Delhi on Tuesday and gave his views on how to strengthen the Congress base in Karnataka. When Deccan Chronicle contacted him, Mr Patil confirmed that he had met Mr Gandhi. "On the invitation of Mr Gandhi, I met him. He seemed to have information about me. He told me that since you are a former police officer and an actor, the party would like to utilise your services. He also asked me about the problems I had with the state unit," Mr Patil explained.
He said he had told Mr Gandhi that the Congress could not come to power as it had ignored majority communities. “I did not discuss the issues Lingayat leaders in the party have as I felt it would not be appropriate to bring them up,” he said. A Congress MLA told Deccan Chronicle that the party was worried if its attempts to woo the Lingayat votes would go awry after the BJP made Jagadish Shettar, a popular Lingayat leader from north Karnataka chief minister. “The party seems to be obtaining a feedback on whether the BJP’s LKG (Lingayat— Kuruba— Gowda (Vokkaliga) combination will click which is why the high command has sought a feedback from Karnataka leaders,” the MLA disclosed.
