Colours of freedom
It was festivity tinged with a good dose of patriotism. Hawkers selling national flags, badges, and tricolour balloons found willing buyers on the roads leading to the Manekshaw Parade Grounds where the Independence Day celebrations were held on Wednesday. People were out in large numbers on M.G. Road and Brigade Road, enjoying the moment, and sharing it with others while policemen kept a strict watch on the crowds to check for anyone who may want to disrupt the mood. The day gave some foreigners at the Parade Grounds a glimpse of what Independence Day means to the people. “This is the first time that I have seen Independence Day celebrations in India. I have only heard about the grand celebrations that take place every year. India has a golden history and a rich heritage. Its spectacular to see the participation of so many Indians in an event which unites them all,” said Suzane Perry from the USA.
But people were out doing more than celebrating in other parts of the city. The Bangalore Knights Round Table 174 andBangalore Knights Ladies Circle 107, for instance, held a Freedom Drive Signature campaign, starting from Cubbon Park. Three cars painted in the Tricolor went round the city collecting signatures from those willing to contribute towards children’s education to mark the day.
