CM to minister: Cut short your tour
Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda has decided to crack the whip and force social welfare minister A Narayanaswamy to cut short his visit to the United States in view of the acute drought in Karnataka. Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Mr Gowda said Mr Narayana Swamy had left on a private visit. “He is a responsible minister and the district which he represents is reeling under drought. In such circumstances, the minister’s decision to go abroad sends wrong signals. We will ask him to return as soon as possible,’’ he said.
Mr Gowda, however, defended the decision of three senior bureaucrats to emplane for Australia and the US Sunday night, saying their tours were decided in advance. “They are not going on private vist or study tours. The trip is part of promotional campaign for the forthcoming Global Investors’ Meet. I was supposed to go with them, but cancelled the tour because of drought,’’ he added. Last week the government launched austerity measures in view of scarcity conditions and cancelled junkets of ministers.
