City gets Rs 5,500 cr budget boost
Bengaluru has got a whopping Rs 5,500-crore allocation in the State budget for holistic development of the city, including supply of Cauvery water to newly added areas of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike. The state capital, which has been reeling under a severe infrastructure crunch and multidimensional challenges, including traffic gridlocks, has been given major emphasis in the budget. An allocation of Rs 2,176 crore has been made for the development of signal-free corridors (SFC), upgrading of roads as per Tendersure (a web based tendering tool) norms, development of parking lots and solid waste management.
An amount of Rs 426 crore is proposed to be spent for SFC stretching up to 51.5 km. The stretches that will be developed are Dr Rajkumar road (Soap Factory to Okalipuram), Hosur Lashkar road (Vellara Junction to Central Silk Board), Old Airport road (Vellara Junction to Kundalahalli), Mekhri road (Mekhri Circle to Hope Farm) and Outer Ring Road (Mysore Road to Central Silk Board). A sum of Rs 200 crore has been allotted for road infrastructure under Tender-sure norms. Maintenance will be done on 18 roads, while 27 roads will be developed, including Nrupatunga Road, Raj Bhavan Road, Brigade Road, Church Str-eet, and Cunningham Road.
Eight parking lots have been planned in the space-starved city to ease the congestion in the central business district and to discourage on-street parking. They will cost Rs 200 crore. The city generates 3,500 metric tonnes of waste and to combat this, the State has allocated Rs 200 crore to scientifically manage the waste generated in the city.
