Citizens to watch over localities
To strengthen citizen partnership for safety and neighbourhood preparedness at all times, Civil Defence volunteers from Division 17 staged a route march on Sunday. Over 200 volunteers and wardens took out the march at J.C. Nagar and R.T. Nagar. The campaign, Ready Citizens, was flagged off by Benglauru Doordarshan director Mahesh Joshi. Led by Divisional Warden Cheryl Rebello and Deputy Divisional Warden T. Vidyadhar, the team marched through Jayamahal, Benson Town, Marappa Garden, Matadahalli, Rahamatnagar and R.T. Nagar main road and culminating at the R.T. Nagar police station. The volunteers told residents about Civil Defence and how to enroll into the force.
“The walk demonstrated the involvement of citizens with the police and fire and emergency services to address any contingencies in their areas. Besides coordinating with these services, the Civil Defence Division 17 has also been helpful in solving petty clashes in the neighbourhood. Recently, a construction company was dumping debris in a residential area. Civil Defence volunteers alerted the police and the problem was solved,” said Mr Rebello. Route marches are organised to attract volunteers to the Civil Defence Movement, which was started in the late 1960s. The directorate aims to build a prepared citizenry through emergency and neighbourhood safety training.
