Census 2011: Vehicles override bicycles on city roads
While most of us are fed up with traffic jams, vehicle pollution etc., a micro analysis of Census 2011 has revealed that compared to other districts and cities of the state, the number of bicycles in Bengaluru has come down drastically in last one decade while the number of two wheelers and four-wheelers has increased. According to the Census 2011, percentage of households having bicycles in the city has come down to 22.9 per cent from 29.8 per cent in 2001.
At the same time, the number of households with two-wheelers has jumped to 44.3 per cent from 32.8 per cent in 2001. Households with four-wheelers have increased to 17.5 per cent from 9.2 per cent in 2001. As per the census report, 33.2 per cent of households in Bengaluru have either a computer or a laptop. Of them 18.1 per cent have Internet connections. Also, 67.7 per cent households have mobile phones against 8.9 per cent of households that have only land lines.
As per the census 12.5 per cent of households are still using un-treated water. Amid efforts to popularise solar and other alternative energy sources, 98 per cent households still rely on electricity supplied by BESCOM. The data was released at a census data dissemination workshop organised by the state Census Department. Speaking on the occasion, Dr H. Shashidhar, consultant of the Planning Department said data collected at the time of census would help the government and Planning Commission to review their achievements.
