BSY: Can they do without me?
Dropping enough hints that his leadership is indispensable for the BJP to register a victory in the Assembly elections in 2013, former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa indirectly questioned the ability of Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda and State BJP president K.S. Eshwarappa to lead the party to a victory at the hustings. Asserting that he was very much saddened by the outcome of the Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha by-election, in which the BJP suffered a humiliating defeat, Mr Yeddyurappa called on the party leadership to introspect on the result.
The former CM, who arrived here by helicopter, is scheduled to participate in a mass marriage programme organized by Jewargi MLA Doddangouda Naribole on Monday. “The Udupi-Chikmagalur seat was a very prestigious seat for us as it was previously represented by the Chief Minister. There are seven MLAs belonging to our party in the constituency and we had undertaken a lot of development works. Moreover Dr V.S. Acharya(former higher education minister) was a popular leader in the Udupi region and his death should have brought us sympathy votes.”
Claiming that this was the first election campaign of his four decade long political career he had skipped, BSY said: “I did so because I was pained by the statement of Sadananda Gowda, after I got a clean chit from the high court that eight cases were still pending against me. I did not want to embarrass the party by campaigning”. Mr Yeddyurappa did not agree with the view that he was to be blamed for the loss. As for the decision to take his loyalists to a resort, BSY said it was meant to prove his strength with statements being issued that he had only 10-15 MLAs with him.
