Brimming Kabini douses protest
A record inflow into Kabini reservoir following rains in the catchment area not only helped dampen the stir by farmers but even made them call it off on Tuesday. The authorities in basin districts were relieved as Kabini recorded an inflow of 13, 788 cusecs almost twice that of 7, 500 cusecs a day registered in the last ten days. The officers in-charge of Kabini released more than 9,000 cusecs, almost matching the state’s commitment to ensure an outflow of 10,000 cusecs to Tamil Nadu ahead of the meeting of Cauvery River Authority (CRA) in New Delhi on September 19.
The upshot: Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) and Cauvery River Protection Committee called off the protests and announced that they would await the outcome of meeting of CRA. Officials at Kabini reservoir said they would be able to maintain outflow of 10,000 cusecs over the next few days with rain likely in the catchment areas. KRRS leader K.S. Puttanaiah said that farmers would call off the agitation in view of the record inflow into Kabini reservoir. The Cauvery River Protection Committee headed by former MP, G. Madegowda, would discuss the course of action at a meeting on Wednesday.
