Bengaluru to shut on Bharat Bandh

IT city may see a complete shutdown on May 31 in response to a Bharat Bandh planned for Thursday, called by the NDA and backed by ruling party in the state, the BJP.

Schools, banks and other sectors are expected to stay shut because of the bandh although a number of associations and government institutions said they are yet to take a decision on supporting the bandh.

The Karnataka State Open University has postponed exams scheduled for May 31.
State BJP spokesperson S. Prakash said “The party is supporting the bandh.

We have requested the citizens to cooperate. By tomorrow, we will get a fair picture of the industries and institutions participating in the bandh.”

Transport corporations have no plans to shut down. KSRTC Managing Director N. Manjunatha Prasad said: “We plan to operate normal services on May 31.

We have requested adequate security.” M.P. Prabhu Das, chief traffic manager (operations) of BMTC, however said: “If stone throwing, violence or any untoward incident is reported, we will be forced to suspend services.”

Lokesh Krishna, secretary, Bangalore Petroleum Dealers’ Association, also said petrol bunks would remain open unless there is violence.
