BBMP lifts load off Bengaluru

The city woke up to a cleaner Bengaluru on Monday morning. Heaps of garbage that were strewn all over the city over the last few weeks were cleared in majority of the areas. On Monday, nearly 12,000 tonnes of garbage was cleared from different parts of the city.
Avenue Road, Palace Road, Indira Nagar, Richmond Circle, Kammanahalli and other areas, which had mounds of garbage, were free of the eyesore and stench.
Bruhat Bangalore Mahangara Palike Chief Engineer Prakash told Deccan Chronicle: “We had not cleared the garbage as we did not have any landfills to shift the waste to with the villagers near landfills protesting. As the protests have subsided, the garbage is now being transported to Mandur landfill. The garbage is being disposed of in a scientific manner.”
Mrs. Premlatha, a resident of Richmond Town, said, “We were very unhappy with the way the BBMP was responding to garbage woes. Every day, heaps of garbage were piling up in the street corners. It was a health hazard. Also, a lot dogs gathered near these garbage piles, making it difficult for the people to move around. This area has a lot of eateries, because of the stench and the garbage piles, it was impossible to go to these restaurants. With garbage being cleared, there is some relief.”
New BBMP Commissioner Rajneesh Goel supervised garbage clearance in several areas of the city on Monday. “The commissioner has been going around the city since the day he took charge. The situation has returned to normal now. Every day, the city generates nearly 5,000 tonnes of garbage and a lot of it had not been cleared over the last few days. The garbage is being shifted to Mandur landfill. In a few areas, it is also being dumped in local landfills,” a senior BBMP officer said.
