BBMP eye on M’swaram
First, it was Gandhi Bazaar and then Russell Market. In yet another indicator of the real estate lobby trying to lay its hands on prime land where historic and conventional markets now exist, the BBMP turned its sights on the Malleswaram market on Saturday evicting traders from the premises. Commotion prevailed on Saturday at Malleswaram market till afternoon and a trader, identified as 53-year-old Thimmakka even collapsed on the ground on seeing the police evict her. However, the other traders took care of her.
Over a hundred flower, vegetable and fruit merchants were affected at the 48-year-old market when the BBMP authorities, along with police personnel, swooped down to evict encroachments on the walkway in the market. The BBMP authorities also pulled down unauthorized tarpaulins and asbestos sheets erected by the traders The traders vehemently opposed BBMP’s action saying they should have been given a chance to clear out their wares themselves. “Notice was issued three days back. But, on Saturday, the authorities should have given at least two hours time to evict instead of creating such havoc”, said Malleswaram New Market Vegetable and Fruit Merchants’ Association president N. Venkataswamy.
“Of the 263 shops here, about 10 shops had erected tarpaulins to prevent their shops from getting soaked in rain which had occupied the walkway. What was the need to bring such a huge police force to evict them,” he questioned. Mr N. Anand, a trader, traders who had stocked vegetables and fruits suffered losses.
