BBMP councillors give themselves a fat raise

Even a severe fund crunch in the BBMP will not stop our city fathers from giving themselves a fat raise! Taking a cue from legislators, the BBMP council on Thursday passed a resolution hiking the monthly honorarium and sitting fee for members.
Though the BBMP has been mortgaging its properties to restructure loans and has an outstanding of Rs 7,000 crore, the corporators unanimously voted for enhancing the honorarium. This means that the BBMP will have to spend Rs 1.13 crore per month towards the honorarium and sitting fees, which is three times the expenses so far.
This apart, the council also passed a resolution approving pension of Rs 20,000 per month to councilors when they are not in power. Mayor Sharadamma R., who chaired her last council meeting, approved the resolutions which have now been sent to the government for approval.
The honorarium has been enhanced to Rs 40,000 (from Rs 20,000) for mayor, Rs 30,000 (from Rs 15,000) for deputy mayor, Rs 25,000 (from Rs 7,500) for corporators, Rs 1,500 (from Rs 400) as sitting fees, `1,000 (from Rs 200) for committee meetings and Rs 6,000 (Rs 1,000) for communication and transportation allowance.
Peenya Industrial Area Corporator Thimma Nanjaiah and Jayamahal corporator M.K. Gunashekar highlighted the bad state of former corporators like Cholan and Poosilingam. They demanded the council to support the family members of these corporators who strived to protect the BBMP’s properties.
The council passed a resolution to provide housing to the family members of Poosilingam and Cholan at a highly discount rate to support their family. Hanuman-thanagar corporator K. Chandrashekar demanded the suspension of Ataulla Khan who has been working in the BBMP health wing for the last 25 years in Chama-rajpet and deman-ded stern action against the health officers who failed to take any action against those who were distributing spurious and adulterated milk.
