Basic civic amenities a distant dream

They live in the heart of the city and yet feel they don’t belong. People of Stephen’s Road and its surrounding areas in Frazer town have reason to be upset as although they are part of the IT city, they are denied the civic amenities that should go with it. If they want drinking water, they have to get up at odd times to fill their sumps with it. Should they step out of their homes they come across garbage heaps that have not been cleared for days and stray dogs milling around them. While they have written many letters and made several complaints to the civic agencies no one has bothered to come to their rescue. Instead the BBMP has virtually stopped delivering every kind of service over the last few months, complain the residents. “The roads in the area were dug up in the name of drainage repair and for laying of pipes and have still not been repaired,” they grumble.

Many are afraid they could be in for flooding with the monsoons approaching as the drains have not been de-silted yet. “Stephen's Road and areas nearby receive step- motherly treatment from the BBMP. The main road is fine. But if you were to enter the cross roads you may wonder if you are in a city like Bengaluru. There are so many problems here. We are afraid of what it will be like in the monsoon as the situation was quite bad during the last two spells of rain.

If there is a heavy downpour sewage water could enter into every house here, " says Mr Rajesh Shetty, who has lived in the area for the last decade. “Everyone assures us that our problems will be solved. But no one ever turns up to do anything about them. Frazer town is one of the oldest areas of the city, but it doesnt seem to concern the BBMP,” says Rama S R, another resident.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
