B’lureans at high risk for CVD
Bengalureans are at a high risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). People in the age group of 30-45 are among the worst hit with men being at higher risk then women.
The Saffolalife heart study conducted across 12 cities and covering more than 1.12 lakh people in the age group of 30-100 years for a period of two years (2010-12) has brought out the fact that about 78% of Bengalureans have very low HDL (high density lipo-protein) levels and 75% of those found to be at a risk of developing CVD are overweight/obese.
The level of cholesterol seems to be the highest among respondents in Bengaluru. Younger men are at a higher risk of developing CVD then their female counterparts.
According to the study, 75% males in the age group of 30-34 years are at risk compared to 57% females.
Change in lifestyle, food habits and work culture, lack of exercise, increased smoking are among the major reasons leading to such problem among young men today, says Manjari Chandra, consultant nutritionist, Nutritionist Republic.
About 72% Bengalureans consume less than two servings of healthy whole grain, revealed the study.
A total of 66% of the entire respondents aged 30–49 years who reported a higher heart age than their actual age.
