Alok Ranjan death: Students demand CID probe
Hundreds of students of Nagarjuna College of Engineering, Devanahalli and ABVP activists staged a protest in the city Monday demanding a high level inquiry into the death of a student, Alok Ranjan (20). The boy's parents too joined the agitators who later met the deputy commissioner and submitted a memorandum to him appealing for a CID inquiry into the incident.
Accusing the local police of trying to hush up the matter they said only a CID inquiry could get to the bottom of it.The protesting students also wanted the government to come out with a new legislation for better monitoring of hostels run by professional institutions. “Presently colleges are using the hostels to mint money. A special legislation is the only answer," they said.
Meanwhile ABVP leaders and college principal Dr. S. G. Gopala Krishna had a heated exchange over complaints that the management had stopped students from participate in the protest. An ABVP leader claimed the college gates and hostels were locked and students were warned their parents would be informed if they took part in the protest. But the authorities later relented and allowed them to join it, he added. So far, the Byappanahalli Railway Police have questioned three to four students from the college. Based on the clues provided by them, the police have found that some students are hiding in Bagepalli and Hassan. The police, however, have not arrested anyone in the case. The police have registered cases under Section 306 and 323 of the IPC.
