The BBMP told the high court on Friday that it has identified six sites to dump garbage on the outskirts of the city, as it is facing angry villagers at the only landfill in Mandur.

Garbage contractors complained to the court that they are facing problems in dumping garbage, while the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike officials said they have identified Yelaguppa (10 acres), Sunkadakatte (15 acres), Kallabalu (63 acres), Challaghatta (10 acres), Bagalur (13 acres) and Hindavadi (11 acres) as possible landfills. The Palike officials said they would seek the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board permission over the identified sites.

BBMP sources told Deccan Chronicle that talks are on to convince Mandur villagers to accept garbage trucks till the other sites are finalised and garbage segregation at source falls into place. But Mandur villagers were unmoved.

CM Jagadish Shettar called a meeting with BBMP commissioner Rajneesh Goel to discuss the garbage issue. But hour-long talks were inconclusive. Mr Goel said that BBMP officials are holding talks with local leaders at Mandur. He admitted that dumping garbage at Mandur is not a long-term solution and said segregation of waste should be taken up aggressively.

The palike sources said that talks are on to convince Mandur villagers to accept at least 220 trucks, while normally 400 lories dumped garbage at the lone landfill site. The villagers were told that trucks will unload garbage only during nights and high-pressure industrial deodorant would be sprayed to contain the stench. The villagers would also be given the list of trucks every day, they said.Mr Goel said segregation has reached 38 per cent. He felt that bulk generators should fall in line first. He sought the cooperation of bulk generators, like marriage halls, hotels and commercial complexes.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
