48 hrs to go, is BBMP’s garbage plan ready?
Is the October 1 deadline for segregation of waste at source in the city a mere eyewash? It does seem like it as with just two days left for the city to embrace a new waste management scheme, BBMP still does not have a concrete plan in place for handling the wet waste the city generates.
No site has been located yet for composting the wet waste and although the BBMP hopes to decentralise waste management, the Expression of Interest it has invited for buying or taking on lease the land required cannot obviously yield results in the next couple of days.
BBMP Commissioner Rajneesh Goel, however, feels things are heading in the right direction. “The main focus is to reduce garbage generation and the waste reaching a landfill. We are on the right track and are in the process of finalising several aspects of the project.
We are working on the issue of decentralisation of waste management and finding several places and people for composting the wet waste. It will take a little while, but in the meanwhile people of the city will get used to the new procedure,” he said.
