130 minor boys rounded up for consuming alcohol

In surprise raids on 101 bar and restaurants and 79 liquor stores in the city’s north division, police found nearly 130 minor boys consuming alcohol. They were brought to the respective police stations and their parents summoned. The boys were let off after a strict warning and counseling in front of their parents.

Police also summoned the owners and managers of the liquor outlets and have taken action against them. The owners and managers have also been warned not to entertain minors. “In the recent past, some of the minor boys were indulging in criminal activities under the influence of alcohol. This is a serious issue and we conducted surprise raids to educate the boys about the ill-effects of alcohol. The raids were conducted under the supervision of DCP-North H.S. Revanna,” said an ACP of the North division.

“The raids were carried out on Wednesday night in Malleswaram, Srirampura, Rajajinagar, Subramanyanagar, Mahalakshmi Layout, Rajgopal Nagar, Nandini Layout, Yeshwanthpur, RMC Yard, Peenya, Soladevanahalli, Gangammanagudi, Jalahalli, Vidyaranyapura, J.C. Nagar, Sanjaynagar, Hebbal and R.T. Nagar police limits. Separate teams were formed to conduct the raid simultaneously in all the jurisdictions. A team of two policemen visited each bar and restaurant and liquor store looking for minor boys consuming liquor”, the ACP said.

“The raids were carried out from 7 pm to 11.30 pm and 130 boys in the age group of 14 to 17 years were found consuming alcohol. They were brought to the police stations in the patrol vehicles. Some boys even cried apprehending action against them,” the ACP said. “Our objective was not to terrorise the boys. If they were let off immediately after a warning, they would have gone to other shops and continued consuming alcohol. We wanted their parents to know what their children were doing. The only intention in summoning the parents was to make them keep an eye on their children when they are out of home. Most of these boys were school dropouts and some were students. They were let off after a warning. They have also been warned of action if they are caught again,” the ACP said. Such surprise raids will continue.
