1 dead as mud wall collapses
One man died, while two others had a miraculous escape after a mud slide in an under-construction complex in Michael Palya on 80 ft road of Indiranagar on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred around 3.30 pm near George Thangiah Complex. The plot has been registered with Aratukulam Infrastructure Construction Pvt Ltd.
The deceased was Mohamed Ashrab Ali (19) from West Bengal. The injured – Zahir Ul- Mohammed (25) and Yasin Shareef (23), also from West Bengal – have been admitted to Chinamaya Mission Hospital. The construction was going on for a residential complex in a 300x150 sqft plot. The accident occurred when the land was being excavated for the foundation, which is nearly 15 feet deep. On Saturday afternoon, the three workers were trying to pump out water from the foundation by standing on the edge of the mud wall. The wall caved, burying them in the heap.
Few other workers at the construction site alerted the Indiranagar police, who went to the spot along with rescue workers around 4 pm. They could rescue Zahir and Yasin, who had suffered minor injuries, but Ashrab was already dead. BBMP East Division Chief Engineer Shiva Shankar, who visited the spot, said, “It is completely the negligence of the civil engineer and the contractor. When such a huge residential complex is being constructed, they should have taken necessary precautionary measures. But even minimum precautionary steps were not taken. It is the fault of the contractor and we will issue a notice.”
The Indiranagar police have registered a case of negligence against the civil engineer and the contractor. “We are verifying all documents and only after investigation can we give the names of the contractor and engineers. We have registered criminal case and are investigating,” said the investigating officer.
