A tribute to Indian women
Modern Indian women are the subject of a new show currently displaying at the Impressions Art Gallery in Byculla, Mumbai. The show titled “Aurat Ek Anubhuti” presents a unique confluence of various styles, art forms and themes presented by five different women artists: Meenal Jain (also the curator of the show), Varsha Vyas, Swati Sabale, Simrat Sandhu and Reema Ray. The aim, as Meenal says, is to pay a tribute to the “woman of substance”. “It’s about the woman of today, who has more confidence, awareness and versatility than ever before. She is also as adorable, caring and subtle as she always was,” says Meenal.
While Varsha and Simrat have let their imagination loose to share space with images that resonate with each other, Swati Sabale, with her bold, confident yet sensitive strokes, promises the viewer an emotional roller coaster ride. Reema on the other hand has played heavily with colours and chemicals on old, silver bromide black and white prints to recreate dreaminess on the canvas.
Meenal on the other hand doesn’t believe in sticking to one medium to showcase her creativity. Instead, she migrates from one medium to another, choosing them as per the convenience of the subject. “I believe that one medium can’t really do justice to every theme. While some of them look beautiful in oil, others carry a much greater impact when painted with charcoal,” she says.
The show continues
till February 5
