The mind-space is really mind-boggling! Once it outpours a stream of conscious thoughts which man is aware of and then in the next moment, it fades into a flux of sub-consciousness, which significantly lies below the boundary of senses. This level is denoted as subliminal.
In an attempt to conquer the esoteric depths of mind, talented young painter Tamojit Bhattacharya discharges a mosaic of myriad expressions via an emission of earthy hues upon his pale, white canvas.
Titled Subliminal Quest, this solo show of his recent paintings is an experimental exposition of newer forms and human psychology, put up at Rani Rashmoni’s House in Kolkata’s Jaan Bazaar, open for a public view till May 8.
Discussing the unconventional theme of his exhibition, Bhattacharya elucidates that his collage of abstract imageries “neither describes a scenic landscape nor a congested cityscape nor any figurative art or still objects for that matter.” Rather it evokes a “surrealistic realm of finer psychological thinking tinctured with metaphysical ideas.” His artworks peel off stories into scrapes, thus crossing the border of reality, yet shaping up with rational analysis and a hint of logic. The result is a fountain of subtle outcomes which are not obviously alienated from the circumstances that have emanated it. Each composition strikingly depicts a different mood and a feeling for the spectators to draw and evaluate. At the same time, the painted specimen helps an art connoisseur speculate yet another correlative thought looming ahead largely on the threshold of a picture-frame before it dissolves into nothingness.
Drenched in emotions and figments of imagination, the canvas-contents are purely reflective of the impressionable human minds. “We often dream of a Utopian world only to gratify our wishes mentally. For it is just next to impossible to realise it in practical life. We also aim to attain our desirable goals and embrace an idealistic ideology, only to transform our long-cherished yearnings into truth,” he asserts.
“There are a lot of said-unsaid things which we may or may not visualise r assess in our conscious state. For cognisant reality is miles apart from our own creative impulses, seen through the tinted glasses of a make-believe dynasty, frequently acting as a source of relaxation for us,” he notes. In this offbeat endeavour, the painter tries to freeze-frame those out-of-the-box moments, discernibly permeated with grotesque formations and izarre objects, slightly distorted from their usual, prosaic traits. So the canvases seen here screen the projection of our different subliminal softer moods and castings beyond reality.
Displaying a line of 25 paintings with five being already booked for the sales, Bhattacharya’s seventh solo collection comes dyed in acrylic colours on the canvas. “Am most comfortable in this medium and no other could have done justice to achieve the intended effect. Also as an artist, I couldn’t have felt the texture of the creations the way I had wanted,” he confides. Sizewise, varying between 12x12” to 42X52”, the
paintings are pegged at a price-range starting from `10,000 to `50,000.
For future course, talks are on the anvil for delivering shows at Kolkata’s Academy of Fine Arts and the art gallery of ICCR. An exciting group splurge in Goa is also close at hand. “I would like to focus more on nature and its beauteous aspects in my forthcoming pursuits. Hope, the palette will be even more heart-touching then,” he announces, keeping his fingers crossed.
