Forces of universe shape imagination
She mentions Van Gogh as her favourite, likes to explore new places and dwells in semi-abstract paintings. Meet Smeetha Bhoumik who describes herself “as an intuitive artist who has painted forever”. The Mumbai-based artist recently showcased her creativity in Kolkata, a place she calls “home”.
“With paint as a probe, my art explores the universal connections of our shared existence, letting hues define perspectives, illumine thoughts and uncover images of untold beauty or infinite sadness and hope. Art is a wonderful spiritual culmination which captures life’s emotions, experiences and events,” says the artist.
Her Universe and Imagination series are excellent interpretation of these ideas on the canvas. While oil remains her favourite medium, she loves to experiment with exciting new media. She says: “It comes from nature, life and the awe-inspiring force of this universe, an energy that binds us all together.”
An M.Tech from IIT Kharagpur, Smeetha left her high-paying corporate job to devote herself to her true calling — painting.
Ask her to define art through her prism of understanding and she sats: “Art is an integration of all that has come earlier, a force that unifies my passion, knowledge, skills and experience.”
Armed with post-graduate degrees, corporate experience, national and international exhibitions and awards, she believes her artistic sensibilities are a blend of all this and she avoids the risk of stagnation by indulging in continuous learning in the arts.
Born in the picturesque valley of Dehra Dun, Smeetha has travelled widely in India and abroad. “The sights and sounds of Europe and Rajasthan have left a lasting impression and the influence has sneaked into the Universe and Imagination series,” shares Smeetha.
Her extensive observations are reflected in a global mindset imprinted in her eight solo exhibitions in Mumbai galleries, along with 20 group shows in Mumbai, Kolkata, Jakarta and International Juried Exhibitions online. She is also a member of International Society of Artists and Designers, ArtRom Gallery Guild, Rome. “I have completed an eventful decade creating interesting art and exploring new media,” she declares. Smeetha’s paintings have found their place on the revered walls of Cadbury House, at Ratan Tata’s workplace, Jaslok Hospital and many eminent art connoisseurs have collected her works.
A recipient of the Special Recognition Award (2004) From Period Gallery, USA, she credits her success to “the trilogy of God, family and technology”.
The young artist would like to venture even further in her explorations of this universe and its forces that shape our lives.
