Stunning stunts in high heels

It has been an eventful year for Sonam Kapoor. She has acted in multi-starrers, been directed by seasoned actor Pankaj Kapur in Mausam, wowed everyone in Cannes and most importantly, according to her, has been called “beautiful” by her childhood crush Tom Cruise.

We caught up with the actress and spoke about the year that was, beginning with the recent rumour of her getting Hollywood offers. It is rumoured that she had been offered a role opposite Julia Roberts, which she apparently turned down. Sonam, however, is not very forthcoming when asked about it. “I am not doing a film with Julia Roberts. And when I say ‘no’ to a film, I do not like to talk about it.”
Point noted, and we move to the next item on our list: the famous meeting with international star Frieda Pinto at the Chanel fashion show in Paris. And the actress becomes animated as she begins talking about the famous Malad girl. “Meeting Freida was a pleasure. She is a down-to-earth person and really short, so I had to literally look down to talk to her. But then as a person, Frieda is a true Indian. She has no airs about being a Hollywood star. No wonder we bonded so well. She is an extremely intelligent person too, who knows her way around.”
The other star Sonam has taken a recent liking to is her Players co-star, Bipasha Basu. And though the actress doesn’t count her among her “best friends”, Sonam insists that there were no catfights. “I am a no-fuss actress and get along with everyone.” In fact, she is all praise for the entire cast of Players. “We had a blast working together and we worked really hard on the film.”
Sonam is really excited about her character in Players. Talking about her ‘zara hat ke’ role, the actress says, “I play Naina Briganza in the film. She is a hacker who brings to book the bad guys on the Net. She is a headstrong female but hopelessly in love with Charlie (Abhishek Bachchan). So much so that I readily join the bad guys’ gang to be close to him. The character definitely shows me in a different light.”
“Naina is very real. She is this sweet, bold girl who loves life and sees the world in a certain way. But in the second half, Naina turns vengeful and that’s when the fun begins,” says the actress who is extremely proud of doing her own stunts wearing heels.
In fact, it’s the toughest thing she has done on screen this year and says, “I bet my last penny that no man can compete with me when it comes to performing stunts wearing heels.”
Among the chosen few to meet Mission Impossible star Tom Cruise, Sonam gets very excited when the subject comes up. “He is a very polite person. It was indeed a pleasure to be able to meet him in our country. And while it was just a casual meeting, we — director duo Abbas-Mustan and Neil Nitin Mukesh — will never forget the meeting,” says the beauty who will be spending New Year’s Eve in the Bigg Boss house.
And you can hear the slight complaint in her voice as we speak. “They are making me work on this day so I will not be partying at all,” she says sadly.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
